You can use this guide to choose suitable Android or iOS devices for APOC. It outlines the minimum requirements for security and performance, along with recommended specifications to support day‑to‑day use in care settings.

Operating system requirements

The operating system (OS) is the only mandatory requirement in these specifications. Devices must run an OS version that continues to receive security updates throughout their working life.

Android

  • Minimum (as of March 2026): Android 13 (API 33)

  • For purchases from mid‑2026 onwards, treat Android 14 as the effective minimum

iOS

  • Minimum: iOS 18

  • Recommended: iOS 26

⚠️Important: You must check the current OS support status from Google and Apple when purchasing devices. A device may fall out of support within 12–18 months if updates are not provided.

Processor and memory

These specifications help ensure devices run APOC smoothly and support common care‑home workflows.

Android

  • Processor baseline: Octa‑core at 1.8GHz

  • Preferred: 2.0GHz or higher

  • RAM baseline: 4GB

  • Preferred: 6GB for frequent multitasking

  • Storage minimum: 64GB

  • Preferred: 128GB to reduce storage management

iOS

Any device capable of running iOS 18 has suitable performance for APOC.

Display requirements

Staff need clear, visible screens that support documentation, scanning, and clinical images.

Display sizes

  • Minimum: 6 inches

  • Preferred: 6.5 inches for clinical use

Android resolution

  • Preferred: Full HD (1920 × 1080)

  • Workable: HD (1280 × 720) on smaller displays

iOS resolution

All iPhones that support iOS 18 exceed these requirements.

Camera requirements

Camera quality is important when teams capture wound images or scan medication barcodes.

Android

  • Minimum: 8MP rear camera with autofocus

  • Recommended: 13MP with autofocus and flash
    Useful for:

    • Wound care photography

    • Medication barcode scanning

iOS

All supported iPhones meet or exceed these requirements.

Connectivity requirements

Stable Wi‑Fi ensures APOC works reliably across care environments.

Recommended connectivity

  • Minimum: Wi‑Fi 5 (802.11ac)

  • Preferred: Wi‑Fi 6 for busy sites with many connected devices

Battery requirements

Devices must last a full care shift under moderate use.

Battery guidance

Android

Devices with 4,000mAh batteries generally provide sufficient life, although real‑world performance varies.

iOS

All devices that can run iOS 18 meet the expected performance for a 12‑hour shift.

OS version currency

OS support changes regularly as vendors retire older versions.

📌Note: Review the current OS support status before each procurement to ensure devices remain secure and compliant. OS support may end within 12–18 months if a device does not receive updates.
