Activate GP Connect for your organisation

Guide how to activate GP Connect by completing NHS requirements and registering with Access.

Written by Katie Airey

Before you can use GP Connect, your organisation must complete several NHS security and governance requirements. This process ensures patient data is accessed safely and appropriately.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Admin access to Access Point of Care

  • Authority to sign agreements

  • Around 20 minutes to complete setup

NHS requirements

To access GP data, your organisation must:

  • Complete the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT)

  • Sign the National Data Sharing Agreement (NDSA)

  • Provide an ODS code

Step 1: Check your DSPT

  1. Search for your organisation

  2. Confirm the assessment is active

📌Note: DSPT expires yearly (30 June).

Step 2: Sign the NDSA

  1. Go to the NHS GP Connect NDSA page

  2. Review the agreement

  3. Have your Caldicott Guardian or IG Lead sign

📌Note: This is a one-time agreement.

Step 3: Find your ODS code

  1. Search by postcode or organisation name

  2. Record your code (e.g. A12345)

📌Note: Can’t find your code? See the ODS help guide at https://digitalcarehub.co.uk or contact your Access Point of Care account manager for support.

Step 4: Register with Access

  1. Enter:

    • Facility name

    • DSPT and NDSA status

    • ODS code

    • Contact emails

What happens next

  • Access requests an ASID from NHS England

  • The ASID is applied to your system

  • You will receive confirmation within 10 business days

📌Note: Once Access confirms GP Connect is enabled on your tenant, your System Administrator must complete the facility-level configuration below before residents can be linked.

Step 5: Configure your facility

  1. Go to Facility Settings

  2. Enable GP Connect

  3. Enter the ASID

  4. Save

📌Note: Repeat this step for each facility in your organisation that requires GP Connect access. The GP Connect tab will not appear on resident profiles until this is completed for that facility

Step 6: Set user permissions

Go to:
Admin → Role Management → Permissions → Resident Care

Assign:

  • GpConnectData (View) – view data

  • GpConnectData (Modify) – link residents

  • GpConnectFullView (View) – full record access

📌Note: Assign GpConnectData View as a minimum to all care staff who need access to GP records. Reserve GpConnectData Modify for staff who will be responsible for setting up and linking residents.

⚠️Important: GP Connect will not appear until the facility is configured.
