Understanding GP Connect

Guide what GP Connect is, how it works, and why it is used in Access Point of Care.

Written by Katie Airey

GP Connect is a secure NHS integration within Access Point of Care that allows care teams to view resident GP records in real time. This article explains what GP Connect does, how it works, and what you need before using it.

What is GP Connect?

GP Connect allows authorised users to:

  • View real‑time GP records directly in Access Point of Care

  • Access information such as:

    • Medications and allergies

    • Clinical history and diagnoses

    • Test results and observations

  • Link residents securely using NHS validation

  • Make better care decisions using up‑to‑date information

This removes the need to contact GP practices for routine information.

How GP Connect works

GP Connect integrates with NHS systems to retrieve patient data securely.

Key components:

  • Personal Demographics Service (PDS)
Validates resident identity using NHS data

  • GP Connect API
    Retrieves structured GP clinical records

  • Role-based access
Ensures users only see data relevant to their role

  • Secure auditing
All access is logged for compliance

Why GP Connect is important

GP Connect improves care by:

  • Providing instant access to critical health information

  • Reducing delays waiting for GP updates

  • Supporting safer and faster care decisions

  • Ensuring staff work with accurate, real-time data

Prerequisites

Before using GP Connect, your organisation must:

  • Have an active Access Point of Care account

  • Complete NHS requirements (DSPT, NDSA, ODS code)
